BIDDEFORD, Maine — Tri-captain Jessica Meader scored a goal in each half to help lead the University of New England women’s soccer team to a 5-0 triumph over the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference match played Tuesday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The Nor’easters improved to 8-3-1 with the win, while USM dropped to 4-9-0. The victory was UNE’s ninth consecutive positive decision over the Huskies.
UNE received all the scoring it would need for victory just 2:27 into the contest when Meader put home a low shot from the top of the box after receiving a feed from Becca Murphy. Anna Michaud had won a ball at midfield to help get the play started.
The Nor’easters doubled their lead just over five minutes later on a long shot just inside the right goal post by Devon Wolfenden. Brionne Turcotte had an assist.
The lead would improve to 3-0 in the 28th minute on a beautiful header by Turcotte off a corner kick service by Edie Pallozzi.
UNE poured it on with second-half goals by Meader and Murphy. Meader’s marker was set-up by Wolfenden and Murphy, while Murphy’s goal was unassisted.
The Nor’easters dominated the match, establishing insurmountable margins in shots (29-3) and corner kicks (14-0). Brielle Robinson and Emily Ashman each played a half in goal to combine for the shutout.
Taylor Canastra stopped 12 shots for the Huskies.
