CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men’s basketball fell to the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday night, 71-57 in non-conference action inside of Smith Gymnasium.
The Huskies held a narrow advantage to open up the game, but the Mariners tied the game up three times before Southern Maine went on a 13-3 run to take a 20-10 lead with 11:17 to play in the first half. Maine Maritime went on a 7-3 run to close the Huskies’ lead to 35-31 entering the intermission.
The Mariners closed the gap to just three points twice early in the second half, but could not get any closer as the Huskies outscored Maine Maritime 36-26 in the second half to hang on for the victory.
Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) led the Mariners with 18 points, two rebounds, two assists, and a steal, Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) added a double-double, the first of his career, with 12 points, 10 rebounds, a steal, and an assist and Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) tallied 11 points, two rebounds, two steals, and an assist. Sam Meklin (Rockland, Maine) also tallied 10 rebounds, while leading all players with four blocks.
Southern Maine’s James Stark III led all players with 25 points and 16 rebounds for the double-double, while also tallying three assists, three blocks, and a steal. Christian McCue added 21 points, four rebounds, two assists, and a block and Jalen Lincoln pulled down 12 rebounds, dished out 10 assists, for a double-double of his own, while also recording a steal and a block.
