PLYMOUTH, N.H. — Defenseman Nik Dotolo scored midway through the third period to break a tie game and give the University of New England a 3-2 win over Plymouth State University in non-conference men’s ice hockey action Thursday evening (Dec. 8) at Hanaway Rink.
The victory pushes the Nor’easters back over the .500 mark at 5-4-1, while the Panthers slip to 6-4-0.
Dotolo notched the game-winner on a wrist shot from the right point through traffic at the top of the crease. Dylan Bengtson set-up the goal with a pass from behind the cage.
The Nor’easters had established a 2-0 first period lead only to see the Panthers scored a pair of short-handed goals in the second frame to tie the score.
Andrew Slotnick gave UNE a 1-0 advantage at 9:38 of the first when he poked home a rebound off a saved shot by Ryan Bloom. Samuel Michaud had the secondary assist on the play. UNE would double its lead just over two minutes later on a laser from the slot by Trevor Fleurent. Brady Fleurent received a pass from Bengtson and spotted his brother, Trevor, from behind the goal.
Matt Volonnino and Tim Perron each tallied with PSU down a skater to even things up for the hosts in the middle frame. Volonnino’s goal came at 8:37 of the second, and Perron followed 12:36 into the period.
Rookie goaltender Tate Sproxton had a strong game between the pipes for UNE, totaling 31 saves — 17 of which came in the final period. Thierry Messervier finished with 18 stops for the Panthers.
