WORCESTER, Mass. — The College of the Holy Cross established a 2-0 second-period lead and held off the University of New England for a 3-2 New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) win in a women’s ice hockey game played Friday afternoon at the Hart Center.

Winners of seven consecutive outings, the Crusaders improved to 15-2-0 on the season, 8-1-0 in conference play. UNE dipped to 6-8-2 (3-4-1 NEHC).

Despite a Holy Cross 15-4 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period, zeroes were on the scoreboard. The Crusaders struck twice in a span of 1:20 in the second when Kara Violette and Victoria Young scored back-to-back goals to make the score 2-0 just before the midway point of the frame.

With UNE on a power play, Mary Wirth would set-up Emily Corrales at the 16:39 mark to cut the Nor’easters‘ deficit in half at 2-1.

Aubrey Ashmun tallied what turned out to be the game-winning goal 4:44 into the third period for Holy Cross before UNE’s Gabby Crugnale completed the scoring with a power-play goal on a rebound midway through the stanza. Corrales assisted on Crugnale’s team-best seventh score of the season.

Sydney Helmbrecht had a busy afternoon in goal for UNE, piling up 45 saves as the Crusaders out-shot the visitors by a 48-14 margin.

Winning goaltender Marcia LaPlante had 12 stops to improve her record to 5-0.
