Stony Brook University College Softball 6 vs University of Maine 2

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Laurine German recorded two hits and drove in a pair of runs but the University of Maine softball team dropped its regular season finale to Stony Brook, 6-2, on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Black Bears will be the number four seed in the upcoming America East Championship Tournament. UMaine will face the No. 5 seed, and host, Binghamton Bearcats on Wednesday, May 9 at 11 a.m.

The Black Bears, who outhit Stony Brook 8-5, fell into an early hole on Saturday, giving up single runs in both the first and second innings.

In the first inning, Stony Brook loaded the bases before McCarvill was hit by a pitch, bringing in Torres with the game’s first run.

The Seawolves extended the lead to 2-0 on Corr’s RBI triple in the bottom of the second.

In the home half of the sixth, Melissa Rahrich gave Stony Brook a 6-0 advantage with a grand slam over the wall in left center.

The Black Bears were able to get on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh. UMaine began the inning with back-to-back singles from Meghan Royle and Kristen Niland. Pinch hitter Amanda Nee reached on an error to load the bases. Rachel Carlson reached on a fielder’s choice as Royle was erased at the plate. German’s base knock back up the middle brought in pinch runner Shanna Scribner and Niland. The hit extended German’s streak of reaching base safely to 15 games.

However, the Black Bears were unable to close the gap further, dropping the contest by a final of 6-2.

Molly Flowers suffered the loss in the circle for Maine after giving up two runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts in four innings. Kyleigh O’Donnell tossed the final two innings in relief, surrendering four runs, none earned, on one hit with four strikeouts.
