VESTAL, N.Y. – Alyssa Derrick‘s two run home run in the bottom of the fifth broke a 3-3 tie and lifted the University of Maine softball team to a 5-3 victory over UMBC on Wednesday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Maine stays alive in the America East Tournament and advances to play on Thursday at 4 p.m. The Black Bears’ opponent will depend on the results of tomorrow’s early games. Maine will play the lowest seeded remaining loser.

Erika Leonard helped propel the offense with a single, a double and a pair of RBIs. Laurine Germanadded two hits and scored a pair of runs while Derrick notched her 30th career home run and two RBIs.

Annie Kennedy moves to 10-8 in the circle, picking up the relief win. Kennedy surrendered two runs, none earned, with a pair of hits and three strikeouts.

UMBC took an early lead with a run in the top of the first. Tori Alexander started the inning with a double before Erin Trnka was hit by a pitch. Maddie Daigneau’s bunt single loaded the bases for the Retrievers. Maine starter Kyleigh O’Donnell and the defense were able to get the next two outs before Imani Dawson worked a bases loaded walk, giving UMBC a 1-0 lead. Emily Gilmore tracked down a low line drive in left, ending the inning and leaving the bases loaded for the Bearcats.

Maine came right back to answer with a run of its own in the home half of the first. German got things started with a leadoff single to left before moving up on Meghan Royle‘s sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a ground out by Alyssa Derrick. Leonard followed, as she was able to beat out an infield single, allowing German to score to tie the game at 1-1.

It was German again starting the rally, this time in the third. Royle moved German along to second with another sacrifice bunt before German took third on a wild pitch. Leonard’s RBI double to the left center gap brought in German as the Black Bears took a 2-1 lead.

UMBC responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. After the first two Retriever batters reached in the inning, Julia Keffler’s RBI single through the left side tied the game. One batter later, UMBC attempted a double steal. Maddie Decker threw out the runner attempting to take second but Sierra Pierce was able to come in on the play with the go ahead run, giving the Retrievers a 3-2 lead.

Carlson’s league leading fifth triple of the season began Maine’s rally in the bottom of the fourth. A ground out to second by Niland brought Carlson in, once again knotting the score.

Royle singled in the fifth before being lifted for pinch runner Sarah Coyne. Derrick stepped in and crushed her seventh home run of the season, a towering shot to center, as Maine carried a 5-3 lead into the sixth.

Kennedy and the defense shut down UMBC in the top of the seventh as the Black Bears eliminated the Retrievers by a final of 5-3.
