SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Julia Mahoney’s two goals and one assist paced the Black Bears in their 4-2 win over Bryant University on Sunday afternoon at Bulldog Soccer Field.
The Black Bears (1-2-1) wasted little time in scoring their first goal the the game. Julia Mahoney took the ball from the opening kick-off and fed a perfect pass to Emilie Andersen. Andersen took one touch and rocketed the ball passed the Bryant (2-2) goaltender. The goal came at 00:19 becoming the fastest goal of the 2018 season.
At the 27 minute mark, Bryant evened the score with a goal from Lexi Kraemer. Katie Nugent assisted on the Bulldog goal. The goal was Kraemer’s second of the season.
Less than two minutes later, Birte Speck gave her squad a 2-1 lead. Speck took advantage of a lapse in the Bulldog defense, located a small opening between the goaltender and the goalpost, and found the back of the net.
Mahoney kept her hot first half rolling with her own goal at 32:41. The freshman midfielder navigated her way through the normally tough Bryant defense until it was just her and the goalkeeper. Mahoney simply placed the ball and extended the Black Bear lead to 3-1. UMaine took the 3-1 lead into the half.
The Bulldogs tried to mount a comeback with a goal from Katie Cronin at the 66 minute mark. Becca Michaud was credited with the assist.
Mahoney stopped the Bryant momentum with her second goal by gathering a rebounding off of a corner kick and burying the ball into the back of the net. Beate Naglestad’s corner kick led to the Black Bear’s fourth and final goal of the game. UMaine would hold onto the 4-2 lead for their first win of the 2018 season.
The Bulldogs held an 8-to-6 advantage in shots on goal, while also winning the corner kick battle, 4-1. Keeper Annalena Kriebisch made six saves in goal for UMaine, while her Bryant counterpart, Meghan Dalton, made two.
The Black Bears will travel to Cambridge, Massachusetts, for a non-conference match-up on Wednesday, September 5th against Harvard University at 6:00 PM.
