BOSTON – Holding onto a 2-1 lead with five minutes to go, the No. 25 UMaine field hockey team staved off a late comeback attempt from No. 19 Boston University at New Balance Field on Friday night. The Black Bears successfully defended a penalty corner with just a tick over two minutes left, eventually gaining possession to run out the clock for the victory.

Emily Hindle scored her first goal of the season in the sixth minute of the first half, while Riley Field added a score in the second frame for the Black Bears (2-0). BU’s Casey Thompson put the Terriers (2-1) on the scoreboard in the 65th minute to cut the deficit to one late in the contest.

Mia Borely made three saves in her second win of her career, including a key diving save in the 25th minute to keep the game at 1-0 in favor of the Black Bears. BU split time between Kathleen Keegan and Millie Baker in net, with Keegan getting the start in the first half and Baker taking the second. The Terriers sported an empty net for the final 7:41 in the second half.

MAINE GAME NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS
The Terriers out-shot Maine in bother halves, with the final tally standing at 9-5.
In the penalty corner column, Maine held a 6-4 advantage.
Maine last defeated BU on Oct. 18, 2008, in a 2-1 game played at Harvard. The Terriers had won the previous eight matchups since.
The win marked Maine’s first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since the Black Bears defeated UAlbany 1-0 on. Oct. 22, 2017.
The Terriers had scored four goals in the previous two games, and allowed only one goal in 140 minutes entering today.
Through two games, eight different Black Bears have scored and 11 have tallied at least a point.
The Black Bears have avoided getting a green card or a yellow card in both game this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
6:38 | After Hindle inserted the first penalty corner of the game, Libby Riedl took a pass from Hana Davis, dribbling the ball past a few Terriers and firing a shot on net. Hindle cleaned up Rieldl’s shot by depositing her own shot in the back of the net.
55:22 | Crowley setup Field with a pass in open space, and the junior took advantage, making moves past several Terriers, en route to beating the BU goalkeeper on a shot past her left side.
65:03 | Off of a penalty corner, BU’s Casey Thompson put in a rebound to give BU its lone goal.

The Black Bears are back in action tomorrow, when they take on No. 24 Ohio State at New Balance Field. Game time is slated for 6:00 p.m.
