NEWPORT, R.I. — Olivia Shaw (Saco, Maine) and Sam MacDonald (Lebanon, N.H.) combined for 37 points to lead the University of New England in a 65-43 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women’s basketball victory over Salve Regina University on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 6) at the Rodgers Rec. Center.
Seeing their first action in nearly one month, the win moves the Nor’easters to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in league action. Big Blue has won 13 in-a-row during recent meetings between the teams.
Shaw put up a game-high 19 points and nine rebounds, while MacDonald registered 18 points, eight boards, four assists, and four steals. Jocelyn Chaput (Nashua, N.H.) went for nine points and eight caroms, and Elyssa Nicholas (Southborough, Mass.) drained three treys for another nine points.
UNE was out-rebounded by a 49-42 margin, but made up for the difference by forcing 21 Salve Regina turnovers and holding the Seahawks to just 28 percent shooting from the field.
For SRU (6-5, 3-2 CCC), Ally Esielionis totaled 17 points and Liv Pierce added seven points to go with a game-best 11 rebounds and four steals.
The Nor’easters led 10-9 after the 1st quarter, and used a 12-1 spurt in the middle of the 2nd to separate from a tied game (14-14) on the way to a 29-21 advantage at the break.
The opening basket of the 3rd frame went to the Seahawks, but a 21-5 run by UNE followed as the lead expanded to 50-28 with 1:15 left in the period.
