PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Joseph Yeadon scored with 1:37 gone in overtime to give Salve Regina University a 5-4 win over the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference men’s ice hockey action Saturday afternoon (Nov. 12) at Portsmouth Abbey Rink.
The Nor’easters had forced overtime when Dylan Bengtson scored with 14 seconds on the clock in regulation. Bengtson’s game-tying tally came with UNE on a power play and its goaltender on the bench in favor of an extra skater.
Cameron Russo notched the lone goal of the first period to give Salve a 1-0 advantage before the Nor’easters struck three times in the middle frame to take a 3-1 cushion into the second intermission. Ryan Burr and Chris Healy scored consecutive power-play goals less than two minutes apart, and then Chris Harlow made it a two-goal advantage at 17:13.
The host Seahawks would roar back in the third with three straight scores of their own. Pat Thompson, Jack Billings and Evan Schultz provided the offense, which seemingly was going to give Salve the win before Bengtson struck in the closing seconds.
Blake Wojtala earned the win with 31 saves in goal for the Seahawks (5-1-0, 4-0-0 CCC), while Connor Maloney had 23 for UNE (1-2-1, 1-2-1).
The Nor’easters, who host Johnson and Wales University on Thursday, converted 3 of 10 power-play chances while only being whistled for two infractions all game.
