BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men’s Soccer team earned a crucial Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over the University of New England Friday afternoon with a 3-1 win over the Nor’Easters. The Hawks are now essentially assured a spot in the CCC Tournament beginning next weekend.

The Hawks used a Nor’Easter miscue to capitalize and earn the first goal of the game. A misplayed ball by UNE allowed Dan Kelly (Miller Place, N.Y.) to steal possession and bring the ball down the right side. He would draw out Nor’Easter keeper Elijah Leverett (North Yarmouth, Maine) before putting up a shot on net. Leverett got two hands on the ball, but it trickled away from him and rolled to the middle of the goal, giving RWU the 1-0 lead.

Sean Janson (Avon, Conn.) doubled the Hawk lead in the 17th minute. He would take possession of the ball on the left side and beat a Nor’Easter defender one-on-one. After making his way towards the goal, he kicked a shot just past the UNE keeper to tally his fourth score of the year.

In the second half, Mader gave the Hawks a three-goal advantage. In the 57th minute, Chieffo stepped up with a corner kick to the back side of the goal. Mader out-jumped the defense and headed the ball into the right corner to make it a 3-1 game.

The Nor’Easters ended the shutout and grabbed their first goal of the game in the 64th minute. The Hawks had a pass bounce off of one of their own and go backwards towards Dan Good (Hampden, Maine). Good would find Ryan Stephens (Stow, Mass.) on the right side for a shot to the left corner to put UNE on the board.

However, that would be the only goal allowed by Roger Williams, as the Hawks collected the CCC win.

Edmund Geschickter (Brookline, Mass.) had four saves for Roger Williams in the win, while Leverett had one save in 45 minutes of action.

Roger Williams (5-11-2, 3-3-2 CCC) will host Salve Regina Tuesday in the team’s regular season finale. UNE (3-10-4, 1-6-1 CCC) welcomes Wentworth in their final regular season game.
