DUDLEY, Mass. — The University of New England field hockey team finished up a 12-0 ledger in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action with a 6-0 victory over Nichols College on Friday night at Vendetti Field.
It’s the second time in program history, following the 2013 squad, that the Nor’easters (17-3) have run clean through the league. Now, for the fourth straight season, Big Blue will host the CCC Championship and start this year’s tournament with a semifinal match against Salve Regina University on Wednesday.
UNE took the initial 43 shots of the contest before the waning minutes, and made its first mark on the scoreboard in the 10th minute on a goal by Bridget Cavanaugh. The lead became 2-0 in the 16th minute, as Brooke Lemerise converted her first collegiate goal off a feed from Vonde Saunders.
The Nor’easters, who ended with a 19-0 advantage in penalty corners, gained a three-goal cushion in the 46th minute on a tally by Alex Staples. Scoring picked up down the stretch, as Becky Zakorchemny got on the board in the 60th minute and then again in the 63rd to up the spread to 5-0. Olivia Madore capped things off in the 65th minute.
Holly Smith (Peabody, Mass.) made two saves in the final 83 seconds to preserve her sixth shutout, and UNE’s ninth straight win over Nichols.
On the opposite side of the field for the Bison (2-17, 0-12 CCC), Brooke Misbach made 21 stops and received three defensive saves in support.
