PRESQUE ISLE – The UMPI Men’s Soccer team (0-3) hosted the University of Maine at Fort Kent (6-0) in their home opener on Wednesday night. The Bengals dominated the evening, taking an 8-0 victory on the road.
Five different UMFK players connected on goals in the night, with Carlos Crusat-Lopes (FR, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India) earning a hat trick. He scored all three of his goals in the first half, propelling the Bengals to a 5-0 lead at the break.
As the UMFK focus shifted from an attacking offense to a ball control game of keep away in the second half, the Owls were finally able to get some looks at goal. Perhaps the best chance for UMPI to score came with their first shot of the evening. In the 69th minute, Derek Healy (SR, Hanover, MA) would have a chance at a header in front of the goal. The attempt looked to be heading for the net as it squirted past the keeper, but ended up trickling just wide of the net. The Owls would get just two more shot attempts in the match, both of which failed to hit their mark, and the Bengals would take the 8-0 victory.
The Owls will be on the road this weekend, as they face off with more in-state rivals. On Friday they are set for a 6 PM matchup at Maine – Machias. On Sunday they will matchup with Maine Maritime Academy at 2 PM.
