NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Softball team (4-2) split a doubleheader with the College of New Rochelle (1-1) to kick off their spring break trip.  The Blue Angels would win their season opener in dramatic fashion, walking-off with a 9-8 win before the Owls would overpower their opponent in game two, winning 15-5.

Game 1 – CNR 9, UMPI 8

It appeared as though the Owls were going to get out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam in the bottom of the seventh.  Two singles and a bunt attempt that went for a hit would set up the Blue Angels with a great opportunity to win the game.  UMPI starter Sara Packard (JR, St. Albans, ME) would induce two groundballs that resulted in outs at the plate, giving her team a chance to force extra innings.  Samantha Guitierrez (FR, Fullerton, CA) would step up and drive in the winning run with a single to seal the win for New Rochelle.

The Blue Angels had a big lead early thanks to an early power display.  Victoria Rivera (SO, Bronx, NY) would blast a two-run homerun in the first inning, to start the scoring.  Alexandra Czarkowsky (FR, Cheshire, CT) would hit a two-run shot in the third inning, and the Blue Angels would hold a 7-0 lead after three innings.

The Owls would chip away with runs in the fourth and fifth, and then explode for seven hits and five runs in the sixth, pulling within one run.  In the seventh, Packard would lead off the inning with a walk and find herself in scoring position when Ayana Walker (FR, Columbus, GA) would hit a ball to right that alluded the fielder.  The error would allow Packard to tie the game, setting up the bottom of the seventh drama.

Ariel Williams (FR, Frisco, TX) would lead the Owls offensively, going two for four with two RBI.  Walker would also go two for four in the contest, while Emma Gogan (FR, Truro, NS) and Nicole Marucci (JR, Naples, ME) would hit doubles.  Packard would strike out nine in the game, walk just two, and give up six earned runs
