STANDISH, Maine – University of Maine-Fort Kent (11-1-3) scored four unanswered goals to erase a 2-0 deficit and defeat Saint Joseph’s College (12-5-1), 4-2, in a non-conference women’s soccer contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Sunday afternoon. The loss snaps a seven-game winning streak for the Monks.

Freshman Brenna Smith (Maynard, Mass.) put the Monks up 1-0 with her fifth goal of the year, scored at the 25:52 mark off a Colleen Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) pass, and junior Haley DaGraca (Saco, Maine) netted her team-leading 16th of the season seven minutes later to make it a 2-0 game.

The Bengals cut into the SJC cushion in the 38th minute when freshman Tolu Oyeniyi (Calgary, Alberta) scored off a Sherifatu Sumalia (Tamale, Ghana) pass.

The Monks’ 2-1 edge remained until the 56:58 mark, when Sumalia netted her first of two goals – off a Gabi Riccardi-Shortt (San Jose, Calif.) feed – knotting the contest at two apiece. Sumalia struck again, potting the eventual game-winner off a Catherine Bruno (Montreal, Quebec) pass.

UMFK tacked on an insurance goal in the 89th minute when Kendra Freund (Delhi, Ontario) scored off a Sumalia feed.

SJC senior goalie Brooke Troup (East Bridgewater, Mass.) made seven stops in a losing effort while Fort Kent keeper Valentina Green (Mission Viejo, Calif.) recorded seven saves in the victory.

UMFK held advantages in shots (23-15) and shots on goal (11-8) while both teams attempted three corner kicks on the afternoon.

With the loss, Saint Joseph’s falls to 6-1 in the history of the series with University of Maine-Fort Kent, a team that the Monks had not faced since the 2003 campaign prior to today’s meeting.

As the #4 seed in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament, Saint Joseph’s will host #5 University of Saint Joseph (CT) next Saturday in a quarterfinal tilt, start time TBD.
