GORHAM, Maine – Junior Andrea Stemm (Gorham, Maine) scored the first of three first half goals in the eighth minute to help propel the UMaine Farmington Beavers to a 4-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Wednesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
UMaine Farmington picks up its first win of the season to improve to 1-3. The Beavers have played all four of their games on the road. Southern Maine drops to 1-4.
Stemm scored on an unassisted strike to the far post to stake the Beavers to an early 1-0 lead. Three minutes later senior Sarita Crandall (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) doubled the UMF advantage with a goal in the 10th minute. Sophomore Nickyia Lovely (Gardiner, Maine) scored the third goal of the half for UMF in the 21st minute, and the Beavers took the 3-0 advantage into the break.
In the second half, the Beavers continued to apply the offensive pressure controlling the ball in the Huskies’ defensive third. Senior Emmah Spahr (Winthrop, Maine) broke through for the Beavers’ fourth goal redirecting a pass into the circle Jenessa Talarico.
UMF senior Alyssa Arsenault (Winthrop, Maine) made four saves to earn the shut out. Southern Maine starter freshman Anna Huff (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) made two saves and allowed three goals in 27:08 of action. Huff was relieved by classmate McKenzie Cormier (Hiram, Maine/Sacopee Valley). Cormier allowed one goal and made four saves in the final 42:52 of action. UMF had a 12-6 advantage in shots and a substantial lead in penalty corners at 13-2.
Southern Maine starts the Little East Conference portion of its schedule on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) at Eastern Connecticut State. UMaine Farmington remains on the road and will face Bates College on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) in a non-conference game.
