FARMINGTON, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Women’s Basketball Team (0-7) fell in a tight match up with the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers (4-5) on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 57-51.

Emilia Churchill (SO, Washburn, ME) would hit a pair of three-point shots in the early going to help the Owls grab a lead. UMPI would hold a slim 14-11 lead after the first quarter.

The two teams would continue a back-and-forth affair throughout the second quarter. Midway through the period the Beavers would reclaim their first lead since an early 1-0 score. The Owls would not let their hosts build a lead, but a late three-pointer by Sara Lamb (SO, Topsham, ME) would give the Beavers a three-point lead at the half.

UMPI would start the second half strong, and after two and a half minutes of play into the third quarter, they would once again grab the lead. With the score in the Owls favor at 30-29, the Beavers would turn up the pressure with a 13-5 run that would put them in the lead for good. UMF would hold a nine-point lead going into the final period.

The Owls would show their resiliency late, as they would look to Rhylee Wright (SO, Frenchville, ME) who had the hot hand. Wright would knock down two three-point shots and score 11 points in the first five minutes of the final period, to make the score 50-48 in favor of the Beavers. The Owls would find themselves down four in the final minute, but were not able to convert on their opportunities, forcing them to put UMF on the free throw line. The Beavers would convert, putting the game out of reach for UMPI and sealing the deal on a 57-51 victory.

Wright would lead all scorers with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Kendra Silvers (FR, North Berwick, ME) would tally ten points and five rebounds, while Churchill would end the game with eight points and six rebounds. Brianna Losee (SR, Pittsfield, ME) would track down seven rebounds for the Owls.

The loss rounds out the first semester of play for the Owls as they take a holiday break before returning to action in the new year. Their next contest is scheduled for January 6th at home against the University of New Brunswick at St. John.
