AUGUSTA, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (10-10) would win their third straight game with a hard fought 97-84 road win over the University of Maine at Augusta Moose (7-11) on Thursday night.
The two teams would jockey for position in the early going, but an 11-1 run would give the Moose their biggest lead of the game midway through the first half. The Owls would quickly cut into the six-point deficit, and Maurice Harris (SR, Miami, FL) three-pointer would put UMPI back on top. Kevin Collins (SR, Fort Washington, MD) would knock down a deep ball and hit two free throws on the next possession to help give the Owls a 41-36 lead at the half.
UMPI would score on their first three possessions of the second half, building a nine-point lead, but the Moose were able to fight back. After being down ten with 16 minutes to play, UMA would slowly cut into the lead and manage to tie the game with just under 12 minutes remaining. The Owls would continue to shoot the ball well and put together defensive stops down the stretch as a 14-5 run, followed by a 15-6 stretch in favor of the Owls would put the game away late.
The Owls would shoot 56.3% from the floor in the second half and knock down four of nine three-point attempts. UMPI would have a distinct rebounding advantage throughout, grabbing 58 missed shots, while the Moose were credited with 41 rebounds.
Five UMPI players would score in double digits.
Harris was dominant for the Owls, scoring 28 points and grabbing ten rebounds. Kevin Collins would add 19 points on five of ten from three-point range, while collecting eight rebounds. Anthony Chacho (SR, Watertown, CT) would end with a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing a game-high 16 rebounds. Deandre Duncombe (Fr, Port St. Lucie, FL) would score 14 as well, while dealing out eight assists, and Kim Collins (SR, Fort Washington, MD) would add 12 points.\
UMA’s Quinn Mitchell II (JR, Meriden, CT) would lead all scorers with 30 points. Dustin Simpson-Bragg (JR, Fairfield, ME) would score 18 points and grab seven rebounds, while Jordan Holmes (SR, Oakland, ME) ended with 13 points and seven rebounds.
The Owls will host the Fisher Falcons on Sunday at 2 pm. The game is a rematch for a showdown in Boston on December 10th, a game which the Owls won by a score of 80-72.
