MMA Women's college basketball 68 vs UM-Presque Isle 33

CASTINE, ME – The Maine Maritime Academy Mariners (14-7) used a big third quarter run to pull away from the University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (3-17) on Tuesday evening. The Mariners would go on to a 68-33 victory.

After falling behind early, UMPI would fight back and take a 5-4 lead on a Teagan Laweryson (SR, Moscow, ME) three-pionter with 6:34 remaining in the first quarter. MMA would respond with a Melinda Ogden (SO, Searsport, ME) three, and an Alayne Felix (KR, Mahopac, NY) layup to reclaim the lead, but the Owls would knot the game up at nine with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Owls would end the quarter with a string of three turnovers, allowing the Mariners to take a 13-9 lead.

MMA would never surrender the lead from that point on. The Owls would close to within two points on the first possession of the second quarter, but the Marines were quick to respond. A 13-4 run by MMA would put the Owls down 12 at the half.

The Owls would open the second half and struggle offensively. They would go for over five minutes without hitting a field goal, allowing the Mariners to go on a 17-2 run and open up a 47-20 lead. MMA would hit ten of 15 attempts from the floor, including three of five from behind the arc to bury the Owls. UMPI would never recover, and the Mariners would cruise to the 68-33 victory.

The Owls showed a balanced offensive attack in the game. Jessy Dickison (SR, Houlton, ME), Laweryson, Marissa Reagle (FR, Seattle, WA), and Rhylee Wright (SO, Frenchville, ME) would score six points apiece.

The Mariners’ Felix would lead all scorers with 12 points. Chloe Smedley (SO, York, ME) would add ten points as 11 different players would score for MMA in the contest.

The Owls will host their last home game of the season on Saturday when they welcome The College of St. Joseph (VT) into town. That game will tip at 1 pm. The Owls will finsih their regular season schedule on Thursday, February 15th with a trip to the University of Maine at Fort Kent.
