CASTINE, Maine – The Maine Maritime Academy men’s soccer team picked up their first win of the season on Sunday afternoon, defeating Maine-Presque Isle 5-0, in non-conference action on Ritchie Field.
The Mariners got on the board first, after nearly 30 minute of scoreless play when Tristan Richards (Greenville, Maine) passed a ball back to Dalton Moore (Hollis Center, Maine) for his first career goal.
In the 35th minute, Evan Backus (Farmington, Maine) scored his first career goal when his corner kick bounced off the head of Presque Isle’s keeper Matthew Manter and into the top of the net, to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead.
Maine Maritime picked up the scoring in the second half when Erik Andreasen’s (Gorham, Maine) shot dropped into the net over Manter’s head for his first goal of the season.
Moore recorded his second goal of the game in the 51st minute in a pass in front of the net from teammate Gerald Aquino (Montville, Conn.) to make it a four-goal game.
Aquino added a goal of his own, the first of his career, in the 79th minute to give the Mariners a 5-0 lead.
Joshua Reeks (Bedford, N.H.) earned the win in net for the Mariners with six saves, while Manter got tagged with the loss in net for the Owls also stopping six shots.
The Mariners improve to 1-2-1 on the year and will return to action on Sunday, September 18 at Curry College.
