LYNDONVILLE, Vermont – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Men’s Soccer team (0-1) opened their season on the road and dropped a 3-1 decision to the Lyndon State Hornets (2-0) on Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets set the pace early, connecting on the first goal of the game at the 8:12 mark when Devin Cowan (JR, Saranac Lake, NY) would convert in front of the net off of a pass from Hunter Torrey (JR, Newbury, VT). A few minutes later Torrey would put the home team up by two goals when he connected on a header that found the back of the net. Lyndon State would continue to put pressure on the Owls with 18 shots on goal in the first half, but the UMPI defense would stand its ground as starting keeper Matthew Manter (JR, Caribou, ME) and that defensive unit would record nine saves to keep the visitors in the game.
The Owls were able to turn some momentum in their favor to start the second half, putting some of the pressure onto the Lyndon State defense. After the two teams traded shots on goal, it was Derek Healy (SR, Hanover, MA) who would finally convert on an unassisted goal and make the score 2-1 in favor of the Hornets. UMPI would survive a barrage of shots by Lyndon State before getting another shot offensively. The Hornets would hold their ground and with just six minutes to play they would put the game away when Torrey would finish a scoring opportunity off of a pass from Cowan to put the host team up by two. Time would wind down before the Owls could mount any attack and Lyndon State would take the 3-1 victory.
Manter would finish the contest with 14 saves after the Hornets would put 17 shots on goal.
The Owls continue their opening weekend road trip with a stop at Maine –Farmington on Sunday afternoon. The game is scheduled for a 3 PM start.
