BIDDEFORD, Maine — In an exhibition game at the Harold Alfond Forum Saturday evening (Jan. 7), the University of New England men’s ice hockey team defeated the United States National Under-18 Team by a score of 5-2.
The victory came just one night after the US Team’s 6-2 victory over the University of Maine, and marked the first time an NCAA III squad had beaten the US this season (4-1).
Senior captain Trevor Fleurent had a hand in all five of the Nor’easters’ goals, scoring two and setting up three. Ryan Bloom had a goal and two assists, while BradyFleurent scored one and set-up another. Armand Uomoleale accounted for UNE’s other goal.
Sean Dhooghe and Tommy Miller scored for the US Under-18 Team.
The visitors led 2-1 after one period, as Dhooghe and Miller sandwiched goals around Trevor Fleurent’s first tally of the evening. Dhooghe scored an unassisted short-handed goal at 6:02 of the frame, rushing in alone and completing a nifty back-handed shot as he moved across the slot. Fleurent beat US goaltender Adam Scheel five-hole from the high slot at 15:28 after receiving a pass from Bloom. Miller’s goal with 2:02 remaining in the period came on the power play.
UNE would hold the US team scoreless the remainder of the evening, while notching a pair of goals in each of the final two periods. Uomoleale evened the score at 2-2 with 8:13 elapsed in the second, converting Blaise Healy’s feed from behind the cage, before Brady Fleurent gave the Nor’easters the lead for good with a power-play goal less than four minutes later. Fleurent putting home a pass from the left point by his brother, Trevor.
Bloom doubled UNE’s lead (4-2) at the 7:32 mark of the final period when he converted a feed from Trevor Fleurent. Brady Fleurent recorded a secondary assist on the goal. The Nor’easters would complete the scoring on Trevor Fleurent’s empty-net goal in the final minute.
Tate Sproxton picked up the win in goal for UNE, totaling 30 saves. Scheel had 24 for the US Under-18 Team.
