WELLESLEY, Mass. — Becca Murphy (Durham, N.H.) redirected a cross by Katie Beaudoin (Coventry, R.I.) with 1:31 remaining to give the University of New England women’s soccer team a 2-1 win against Wellesley College on Wednesday afternoon (Sep. 6).
Beaudoin tracked down the ball in the left corner and worked herself free from a defender on her back to send a low pass into the middle, where Murphy’s touch angled it just inside the right post.
The Nor’easters improve to 2-1 on the young season with the result, while the loss is the first for the Blue in three outings (1-1-1).
Beaudoin opened the scoring in the 34th minute for UNE, tucking a 20-yard attempt inside the left frame. That advantage lasted a little more than eight minutes (42nd), when Wellesley’s Julia Jung controlled a rebound off the crossbar and tied the match. Gen Crotty assisted on the play with the initial shot.
The marker for the hosts was the only one to get past Emily Ashman (Madison, Conn.), who was tested for 11 saves in the UNE cage.
Wellesley, which ended with an 18-13 edge in tries at goal (12-7 on-goal), received a five-save effort from Olivia Reckley.
