GORHAM, Maine — The visiting University of New England Nor’easters used a run of six consecutive goals to overcome an early two-goal deficit and went on to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies 13-6 in a non-conference men’s lacrosse match Wednesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The win snapped a two-game losing skid for the Nor’easters, and improved their overall record to 7-4. The Huskies slipped to 3-4 overall.
USM junior Nate DelGiudice (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) gave the Huskies a 3-1 lead with 2:32 remaining in the first quarter, but that would be the last goal for the home side in the first half.
UNE tied the game before the quarter ended as senior Dan Auger (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) and junior Tom Luttrell (Greenbrae, Calif.) found the net in the final 75 seconds. Luttrell’s marker came with 4.7 seconds left in the quarter.
The visitors wasted little time gaining the lead as senior Connor Leggett (Sunderland, Vt./Cushing Academy) won the second-quarter faceoff and scored on a solo effort 20 seconds into the quarter. UNE would go on to outscore the USM 4-0 in the quarter to take a 7-3 lead into the halftime break. Auger scored twice in a span of 24 seconds to make it 6-3. Rookie Collin Morrow (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) scored 23 seconds after Auger giving the Nor’easters three goals in 47 seconds and a 7-3 lead with 8:28 remaining.
DelGiudice gave the home side a spark with the opening goal of the third quarter at 12:55. UNE responded with a run of four goals to close the quarter up 11-4. DelGiudice notched his third goal of the game at 12:26 of the fourth quarter, and senior Keegan Smith (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) followed with a goal at 9:25, to cut the UNE lead to 11-6, but that would be as close as USM would get.
Auger and Morrow finished the game with three goals apiece to pace the Nor’easters. Auger also dished off two assists to finish with five points. Sophomore Alex Zadworny (Florence, Mass./Northampton) had two goals and one assist. Senior goalie David Pearson (Scarborough, Maine) stopped 14 shots to earn his seventh win of the season.
DelGiudice led the USM offense scoring three times and passing out an assist. Smith and rookies Bryce Randall (Portland, Maine/Deering) and Tristan Dundas (Abbotsford, B.C.) all scored once. Junior Zach Bessette (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) made 13 saves in the USM goal.
