WATERVILLE, Maine — The Colby College women’s soccer team beat the odds in a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over University of New England in non-conference play on Wednesday.

The Nor’easters (7-3) had not allowed a goal in the second half and overtime all season. UNE had given up just four goals in the first nine games.
However, the Mules (4-5) refused to quit after falling behind 1-0 at halftime. Nicola Katz tied the game with 8:46 left in regulation and Aliza Van Leesten  tallied with 18 seconds remaining in the first overtime.
Colby was putting on heavy pressure on the tying goal. Katz took a cross from Van Leesten with 10:02 to play and one-timed a bouncer that forced UNE goalkeeper Brielle Robinson  to make a fine save.
The Mules took advantage of their next opportunity just 1:16 later when Emily Martin ripped a shot that hit the lower part of the crossbar and bounced down. Katz was the first player to the ball and slipped a shot into the lower right corner as Robinson was coming back across the goal.
The Mules had a 4-0 shot advantage in overtime and cashed in when Van Leesten scored off an assist from Hannah Brozdowski (Easton, Conn.).
UNE’s goal started off a corner kick that went past the goal. Edie Pallozzi  was the benefactor of some quick touch passes from Taylor Littlefield Langevin and Katie Beaudoin . Pallozzi took a centering pass right in front of the goal and poked home the score.
Colby’s best chance in the first half to get a goal came off the foot of Katherine Gillespie. Van Leesten came in on the right side and fed a ball across the ground to Gillespie, who one-timed a shot that was deflected away by a UNE defender standing next to Robinson.
Sam Rizzo made six of her 10 saves in the second half for Colby. Robinson finished with five stops, with four coming in the second half and overtime.
