WATERVILLE, Maine — Speros Varinos pitched a complete game and Tufts University took an early 3-0 lead on the way to a 6-2 victory over Colby College in NESCAC East baseball Friday at the Colby Baseball/Softball Complex.

The Jumbos, ranked first in New England, moved to 17-2-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference. The Mules fall to 5-15 overall and 1-6 in the league. The two teams play again Saturday at noon in a doubleheader at Colby.
Varinos moved to 6-0 overall in six starts.
The Jumbos scored an unearned run in the first inning. Tom Petry reached on an error and took second when Oscar Kutch walked. Tommy O’Hara singled to left field to bring in Petry.
Colby starter Brooks Parker got out of the jam in the first inning and kept it at 1-0 until the Jumbos scored two runs in the fourth inning.
Nick Falkson led off the fourth with a double to left field. The Mules were able to get the next two outs, with Falkson only advancing to third. However, two more unearned runs came in on another Mule error on a ball hit by Harry Brown. Falkson came in on the error for a 2-0 lead. Eric Schnepf was hit by a pitch to push Brown to second base. Will Shackelford followed with a single to bring in Brown.
The Mules cut the margin to 3-1 with a lone run in the bottom of the fifth. Andrew Della Volpe doubled to left center and then took third on a ground out by Andrew Sterup. Tyler Mulberry followed with a sacrifice fly to score Della Volpe.
The Jumbos thwarted any chance of a comeback with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Casey Santos-Ocampo was hit by a pitch to start the inning and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brown. Schnepf singled to left field to score Santos-Ocampo and took took second on the throw. Will Shackelford smacked a double down the left field line to bring in Schnepf. Petry singled to plate Shackelford with the final run and went all the way to third on a two-base error.
Andrew Sterup hit a long home run to right center field in the bottom of the eighth for the final run of the game.
