BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Tufts field hockey team clinched the top seed for the upcoming NESCAC Tournament with a 1-0 victory over Bowdoin in the regular season finale at Ryan Field on Wednesday evening.
The Polar Bears fall to 11-4 overall with a 6-4 mark in conference action. The Jumbos secured the top seed after finishing 8-2 in the NESCAC and 13-2 overall. Both teams will learn their conference tournament pairings later this evening following the conclusion of regular season play around the league.
Bowdoin controlled the opening minutes of play, tallying a pair of penalty corners and four shots before the Jumbos moved the ball to the far end for a bid of their own.
Elizabeth Bennewitz lined up a hard drive from the top of the circle on a penalty corner and watched her shot deflect off the left post. The Polar Bears later peppered Emily Polinksi with three quick shots that Polinski denied with a dive.
The Jumbos broke through 15 minutes into the second half. Marguerite Salamone carried the ball to the endline and worked her way towards the left post. Salamone found a gap as Clara Belitz dove to cut off the shot, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
Bowdoin extended the game, earning four consecutive penalty corners after time expired. The Polar Bears appeared to score on their fourth attempt as a blast from the top rattled into the cage, but the goal was called back and the Jumbos came away with the victory.
Bowdoin outshot the visitors by a 20-5 margin and held a 20-3 edge in corners. Belitz ended the day with three saves. Polinski made six stops for the Jumbos.
