WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Thomas College softball team allowed a late lead to slip away as the Terriers fell to Williams College, 6-2, in their first game of the NCAA Regional Tournament on Friday afternoon.
The Ephs will take on the College of Staten Island in the winner’s game at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. The Terriers will face Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the elimination game tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
The Terriers opened the scoring in the top of the first as Lexi Colpack (Franklin, N.H.) led off with a walk. Colpack was immediately moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Courtney Veilleux (Sidney, Maine). Sydney LeBourveau (Jericho, Vt.) ripped a double to left center to plate Colpack for a 1-0 lead.
Thomas added another run in the fourth as Korrie Laren (Blackstone, Mass.) and LeBourveau reached on back-to-back singles. After a sacrifice bunt to move them over, Kayla Bess (Madison, Maine) grounded out to second base to score Laren for a 2-0 advantage.
Williams began their comeback in the bottom half of the fifth as Rebecca Duncan led off the inning with homerun to left field. After a single from Margo Beck, Riley Salvo hit a ground ball to third base. An errant throw to second base sailed into the outfield to tie the game up at 2-2.
The Ephs continued to pour it on as Kristina Alvarado plated two more runs on a single to left field to take a 4-2 lead. Jessica Kim followed up with a two-run blast to left field to increase their lead to 6-2.
The Ephs held off the Terriers in the final two frames to finish the game at 6-2.
Duncan was given the victory on the mound for Williams in four innings of work and one hit allowed after relieving Brooke Bovier. Bovier threw the first three innings, allowing two runs on three hits.
LeBourveau shouldered the loss for Thomas after throwing five innings, allowing seven hits and six runs (five earned). Haley Littlefield (Mt. Desert Island, Maine) threw the final inning with no runs allowed.
