Justin Martin scored a game-high 17 points and Raheem Anderson had 16 points and five assists as the Husson University Eagles upended Thomas College of Waterville 74-59 in a mutual North Atlantic Conference opener at the Newman Gymnasium on the Husson University campus in Bangor on Tuesday night.
Husson is now 3-0 overall while Thomas is now 1-3 after absorbing its third straight loss.
The Eagles used an eight-point run in the second half to transform a 41-34 lead into a 49-34 advantage and they were never seriously threatened after that.
Martin’s layup started the 8-0 run before Cole Thomas and Kyanti Blyden each drove to the basket and wound up converting traditional three-point plays as they were each fouled while finishing their layups.
D.J. Bussey scored 11 points and Blyden had 10 more for Husson, which overcame a 57-37 rebounding disadvantage and a poor shooting night (34.7 percent from the floor) to post the win.
Justin Thompson’s seven rebounds and Anderson’s five were tops for Husson. Martin had four rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots to go with his 17 points.
John Morgan had 16 points for Thomas and he also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out two assists. Willie Grant and Justin Butler had eight points apiece while Carlos Gonzalez had a game-high 13 rebounds to accompany his seven points. Andrew Middleton had 10 rebounds.
