Green Mountain Men's college basketball 64 vs Thomas 52

POULTNEY, Vt. – The Thomas College men’s basketball team fouled 22 times in the second half as 20 made free throws handed Green Mountain College a 64-52 victory on Friday night in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play.

Green Mountain (6-8, 4-5 NAC) jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the first six minutes of the game capped by a Sean Leflore layup. The teams then traded baskets back-and-forth for the next four minutes and found themselves deadlocked at 13-13 with 10:10 remaining.

Thomas (7-8, 4-4 NAC) established a small seven-point cushion with a 10-3 run over the next three and a half minutes to take a 23-16 lead following a John Morgan (Sanford, Maine) trey forcing the Eagles into a timeout.

The visitors extended their lead to 29-20 after a Demetris Webster (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) layup with just 1:20 remaining only to see the Eagles score the final six points of the half to send the Terriers into the break with a 29-26 lead. GMC’s Diante Warner scored four of the last six points during the mini run.

The Eagles retook the lead with an 8-3 run to open the second half capped by a De Shaun Carr breakaway dunk to give the hosts a 34-32 lead at the 16:44 mark.

The score remained close over the next five minutes until the Terriers claimed the lead back at 40-37 thanks to a Matt Allen (Barre, Vermont) three-pointer. The lead changed hands a few times over the next few minutes before the Eagles inched ahead 49-43 after a Carr jumper.

Thomas’ Angel Gonzalez (Orlando, Fla.) hit a three to close the gap to 49-46 at the 5:06 mark, but the Eagles closed out the game with a 15-6 run which included 11 free throws to ice the game.

Leflore led the Eagles with game highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Carr hit on 11-of-16 free throws for 15 points and added a pair of steals and three blocks. Tyrell Johnson scored a career-high eight points off the bench to lead the reserves.

Thomas received a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds from Morgan. Carlos Gonzalez (Kennebunk, Maine) chipped in with eight points and nine boards while Allen led the reserves with seven points.

The Terriers will head to Castleton tomorrow for a 3:00 p.m. NAC contest.
