WATERVILLE, Maine — The first-ever women’s soccer home night game for Colby College went to the Mules in a 3-0 non-conference victory over Thomas College on Wednesday at Harold Alfond Stadium.

The Mules improve to 2-1 overall heading into Saturday’s 11 a.m. game at top-ranked and defending national champion Williams College. Thomas falls to 0-5 overall.

While the Colby men’s soccer team has played night games at Harold Alfond Stadium, the women were making their debut on the field. The Mules are 13-0 in the series with Thomas.

Laura Arnold (Dallas, Texas) was dangerous throughout the game and scored the game-winning goal at 12:46 of the first half off the first collegiate assist from first-year Lindsay Ayers (Lewisburg, Pa.). Ayers, with terrific speed, beat a defender on the right side and hit a low center pass. Arnold got a step on her defender and was able to flick the ball into the right corner of the goal.

Katherine Senechal (Saco, Maine) scored her first collegiate goal at 59:36 of the contest off a pass from Hannah Brozdowski (Easton, Conn.). Arnold pushed the ball quickly to Brozdowski on a short corner kick. Brozdowski beat a defender and had her centering pass slammed into the back of the net by Senechal.

The Mules closed out the scoring with just 3:23 to play in the game. Jillian Fleischer (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal and Jessica Horick (Minneapolis, Minn.) had her first collegiate assist. Fleischer trapped a centering pass from Horick and turned quickly to fire a low shot into the left corner of the goal.

Colby’s starting defense of Ayers, Nora Mabie (Winnetka, Ill.), Senechal, and Emilie Klein (North Andover, Mass.) have been solid in front of goalkeeper Sam Rizzo (Swampscott, Mass.), who had two saves Wednesday. The Mules have not allowed a goal in the field of play, just giving up a penalty kick against Tufts University. Rizzo had two saves and has not allowed a goal.

Thomas goalkeeper Paige Leary (Palermo, Maine) stopped 12 shots. The Mules had a 29-4 shot advantage and a 12-3 margin in corner kicks.
