STANDISH, Maine – Junior Colleen Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) netted a pair of goals to help Saint Joseph’s College (12-4-1, 7-3-1 GNAC) past Suffolk University (6-8-0, 4-7-0 GNAC), 3-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women’s soccer action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday.

The Monks increase their undefeated streak to eight games, a stretch that includes seven straight wins, and have won 10 of their last 12. The team has not lost in nearly a month with the last loss coming at the hands of Lasell College, 1-0, on September 23rd.

SENIOR MOMENT:

Prior to the start of the contest, the SJC women’s soccer program held a brief ceremony to honor the team’s six seniors: Sarah Comtois (Lowell, Mass.), Emily DeLuca (Gorham, Maine), Lauren Stiles (Gorham, Maine), Brooke Troup (East Bridgewater, Mass.), Angela Valenti (Litchfield, N.H.), and Delaney Kasle (North Reading, Mass.). This group of seniors has helped Saint Joseph’s post a 39-31-6 (.557) overall record with a 24-15-5 (.641) mark in conference play and four GNAC Tournament appearances.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks claimed a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when Sheehan raced into the box, chasing a bouncing lead pass from DeLuca, and headed a ball up and over Suffolk sophomore keeper Julia Fieldsend (Exeter, N.H.) into an empty net.

Sheehan scored her second goal of the game in the 44th minute when she placed a ball into the left corner of the goal after outhustling a Rams defender inside the box. Sophomore Peggy Balboni (Millis, Mass.) set up the play with a long pass to the middle from the right side.

The two-nil score remained until the 72:49 mark when freshman Brenna Smith (Maynard, Mass.) potted her fourth marker of the year. Stiles set up the play with a tremendous individual effort, as the senior midfielder hustled down the left sideline to beat a defender, turned the corner, and found Smith in the goalmouth with a cross. Fieldsend left her post to get the angle on Stiles and Smith tapped and followed the ball into an empty goal.

THE KEEPERS:

Troup made a pair of stops in what was her sixth shutout of the season and 15th clean sheet of her career. Fieldsend made six saves in a losing effort.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph’s held advantages in shots (22-2), shots on goal (9-2), and corner kicks (8-0) in the victory.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
