LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates baseball team split a doubleheader with Suffolk University on Thursday, dropping game one 10-1 before bouncing back to win game two in 12 innings by a score of 2-1.
The Bobcats (16-16) take on Middlebury Friday at 3:00 p.m. to begin the four-team double elimination NESCAC tournament.
The Rams scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back in their 10-1 win over the Bobcats in game one of Thursday’s doubleheader.
Brady Chant led the Rams on offense, going 5-5 with two doubles and three runs scored. Meanwhile Ryan Pordes (7-1) tossed six innings of one-run ball, scattering seven hits and striking out five along the way.
Chant started his big day in the top of the first by hitting a single through the left side. He stole second and advanced to third on a Sean Cameron single. A walk loaded the bases and Matt Brenner singled in a pair to put the Rams up 2-0. One out later, another walk loaded the bases again and Kevin Belskie drove in the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.
Senior Robert Jones (South Berwick, Maine) bounced back from a tough first inning on the mound to toss a scoreless second frame, working around a bases loaded jam to keep Bates within three.
First-year Kyle Carter (Plantation, Fla.) recorded the first hit of the game for Bates, an infield single in the bottom of the third. The Bobcats had runners at first and second with nobody out but did not score.
Jones (1-1) went two innings on the mound before handing the ball to first-year Cameron Carlson (Tampa, Fla.), who went three innings out of the bullpen.
Carlson pitched a scoreless third inning but the Rams scored four in the fourth to put some distance between themselves and the Bobcats.
Chant singled to start the inning and one out later Seth Coiley drew a walk. Brenner singled in another run and a Greg Speliotis single loaded the bases. Three more runs scored in the inning on a fielder’s choice, a Belskie single and a passed ball respectively.
Chant doubled and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch in the fifth to extend the Ram lead to 8-0.
The Bobcats got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Asher MacDonald (Hillsborough, N.C.) singled to start the frame. Carter followed with a single and first-year Will Sylvia (Newton, Mass.) reached on an error, loading the bases with nobody out.
Two outs later, senior Brendon Canavan (Carlisle, Mass.) singled in MacDonald for the Bobcats’ lone run of the game.
First-year Mark Russell (Westford, Mass.) relieved Carlson in the sixth, tossing a scoreless inning before giving up a pair of runs in the seventh.
Carter finished game one 2-3 at the plate, MacDonald went 1-2 with a run scored and a walk. Canavan went 1-3 with a run batted in. The Rams outhit Bates 14-7.
