BIDDEFORD, Maine – University of New England (1-0) topped Saint Joseph’s College (0-1), 4-1, in what was the 2017 season opener for both programs in non-conference women’s soccer action on Friday evening.
A 10-minute span proved to be the difference for the Nor’easters in a game that was tied 1-1 early in the second half after UNE sophomore Katie Beaudoin (Coventry, R.I.) and SJC senior Lauren Stiles (Gorham, Maine) scored in the 38th and 48th minutes, respectively.
After Stiles scored on a loose ball to tie the game at the 47:42 mark, the Nor’easters managed to net three unanswered tallies in short order, with Beaudoin, Brianna Cota (Hampden, Maine), and Becca Murphy (Durham, N.H.) all hitting paydirt in the 49th, 51st, and 59th minutes.
Saint Joseph’s senior goalie Brooke Troup (East Bridgewater, Mass.) made five saves in a losing effort while UNE split time in net, with junior Emily Ashman (Madison, Conn.) posting a pair of stops in the first half and freshman Jenna Pannone (Prospect, Conn.) picking up the win with four saves in the second stanza.
The Nor’easters maintained slim advantages in shots (14-13) and shots on goal (9-7) while both teams were awarded two corner kicks, both in the first half.
