SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Saint Joseph’s College (2-3) defeated Springfield College (3-3), 4-2, in non-conference field hockey action on Tuesday evening.
Springfield negated a 2-0 Saint Joseph’s lead with two goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but the Monks clinched the victory with a pair of scores in the closing nine minutes as freshman Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine) netted the winner off a Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) feed at the 60:31 mark.
Despite the setback, Springfield College held a 22-11 shot advantage throughout the contest, while also holding an 11-7 margin in penalty corners over 70 minutes of play.
For the Pride, freshman Taylor Conley (Yarmouth Port, Mass.) tacked on her eighth goal of the year, while junior Maggie Kennedy (Clay, N.Y.) added her fifth of the season.
In net, freshman Kaylin Mansir (Gardiner, Maine) – in her first collegiate start – made three saves in 51:24 minutes while sophomore Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) picked up the win without making a stop over 18:36 minutes.
For Springfield, sophomore goalkeeper Emmalie Drake (Pittsford, N.Y.) registered four saves and took the loss.
Saint Joseph’s struck just 6:51 into the contest when senior midfielder Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) caused a turnover in Springfield College territory and fired a pass to Pomerleau all alone in front of the net. From there, Pomerleau carried the ball forward and placed a shot into the right side of the cage to give the Monks an early 1-0 lead.
Saint Joseph’s extended the lead to a pair with 12:28 remaining in the first half, when sophomore forward Kara Kelly (York, Maine) picked up a loose ball and was driving down the left flank, before firing a pass into the crease that was tipped by Pomerleau, and found its way to the back side of the net where Samantha Silva (Laconia, N.H.) knocked it in to make it 2-0 Monks heading into the break.
Kicking off the second period, Springfield cut the deficit in half when sophomore forward Emily Knobel (North Attleboro, Mass.) sent a pass across the Monks’ goal mouth, finding the stick of Conley, who buried the chance with 29:17 to play to make it 2-1, Saint Joseph’s.
Springfield College evened the score just 9:17 later when Knobel sent in a penalty corner, which was stopped by Kennedy. The junior fired a shot on cage that was tipped by a Monks’ defender and into the back of the net to make it 2-2 with 21:00 remaining in the contest.
Pomerleau helped the Monks regain their one-goal lead with 9:29 to play when Hayley Winslow (Falmouth, Maine) sent in a penalty corner that was controlled by Dumond, who sent a shot into the arch that was blocked by a Springfield College defender, only to find the stick of Pomerleau, who tucked in her second of the game to make it 3-2, Saint Joseph’s.
The Monks added an insurance tally with 5:00 remaining when Maddy Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine) gained possession of the ball on the edge of the arch and took a shot that was initially saved by Drake, but Beaulieu caught up to the rebound and converted her opportunity to give Saint Joseph’s a late two-goal cushion.
