NEWTON, Mass. – Saint Joseph’s College (12-0-1, 8-0-1 GNAC) remained undefeated with a convincing 5-0 victory over Lasell College (3-12, 2-6 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Junior forward Brett Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals while seniors Daniel Fox (South Portland, Maine) and Trevor Lopes (Cumberland, R.I.) and freshman Noah Elmore (Berlin, Vt.) chipped in with a goal apiece in what was the Monks’ 13th shutout in as many games.
Junior Blake Mullen (Manchester, Conn.) posted six saves in 78:56 minutes and junior Nicholas Seta (Hampton, N.H.), making his collegiate debut, tallied a pair of stops in 11:04 minutes of relief.
The Lasers split time in net, with Jackson Burhans allowing three goals with four saves in the first half and Matteo Cugno giving up two scores with four stops in the second stanza.
The Monks posted advantages in shots (20-18) and shots on goal (13-8) while the Lasers held a 7-6 edge in corner kicks on the afternoon.
With the triumph, the Monks improve to 4-10-0 all-time against Lasell College and, including a 5-0 win over their GNAC counterpart last fall, have now defeated the Lasers in consecutive meetings for the first time in the history of the matchup.
The Monks return to the pitch tomorrow with a non-conference game at Maine Maritime Academy. Kick-off is slated for 4:30 PM.
