KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Saint Joseph’s College (1-1) started the 2017 season with a pair of games the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex on Sunday. The Monks fell to #2 St. John Fisher (2-0), 8-0, in the opener and defeated former conference foe Emerson College (0-2), 3-1, to pick up their first win of the new campaign

The Monks plated a pair of runs in the top of the second, when Smith led off with a double and later scored on a passed ball and freshman right fielder Madisyn Charest (Sidney, Maine) doubled home sophomore Sam Silva (Laconia, N.H.). In the top of the fifth, freshman pinch-hitter Maizee Lee (Saco, Maine) sent senior third baseman Mariah Harrison (Buxton, Maine) home with a groundout to second base to offset the Lions’ only run of the afternoon, scored in the bottom of the seventh.

In her first start of the season, Smith was dominant, allowing a run off three hits and two walks with six strikeouts in a complete-game gem.

Emerson starter Kodie Cash (Big Bear City, Calif.) took the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) off five hits and four walks with three K’s in six innings. Casey Tsamis (Colchester, Conn.) came on in relief and tossed a one-hit seventh inning.

Smith helped herself with the bat by going 2-2 with a run, a double, and a stolen base.

Freshman second baseman Libby Pomerleau (Saco, Maine) went 2-4 with a stolen base.
