SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women’s soccer team captured its second Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) win in a 5-1 defeat over the Mustangs of Central Maine Community College (CMCC) on Wednesday, Sept. 13.

With CMCC coming off a conference win at the University of Maine at Machias, and SMCC against the College of St. Joseph (Vt.), the first half of this rivalry was all that it was expected to be as both teams traded opportunities in the early stages. First-year Callie O’Brien (South Portland, Maine) opened scoring punching one by CMCC’s goalkeeper Ali Sult at 36:51 to give the Lady SeaWolves a 1-0 advantage before the half-time whistle sounded.

O’Brien netted another early into the second and first-year Jessica Haskell (Saco, Maine) changed the big board with her fifth goal of her rookie campaign 12 minutes later. Sophomore co-captain Emily Harris (Dayton, Maine) scored her first cap of the season in the 76th minute to extend the SMCC lead to four goals.

The Mustangs would get one back courtesy of Megan Duval afore O’Brien brought the lead back to 5-1 achieving the hat trick and her fifth goal of the season— leading the conference with Haskell.

SMCC joins NHTI atop the YSCC standings at 2-0, 2-2 overall. CMCC stands 1-1 in conference play, 2-1 overall.
