AUBURNDALE, Fla. — The University of Southern Maine baseball team exploded for nine runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pull away for a 13-3 victory over Worcester State University in a non-conference game Friday at Lake Myrtle Field #7. The win lifts the Huskies’ overall record to 5-3 while the Lancers slip to 3-6 overall.
Leading 4-2 heading into the seventh, the Huskies sent 12 men to the plate to score seven times on six hits, two walks and a hit batsman. Sophomore Zach Quintal (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) got things started hitting the Huskies’ first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field, following a leadoff walk to rookie Andrew Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) to start the uprising. The Huskies loaded the bases with one out before sophomore Devin Warren (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) forced home a run when he was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Andrew Hillier (Bangor, Maine) followed with a two-run double, and classmate Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) plated Warren with a single. Sophomore pinch hitter Kaleb Bridgham(Minot, Maine/Poland Regional) brought in the final run with a single.
Hillier picked up another RBI in the eighth inning with a bases loaded fielder’s choice, and a second run scored on an infield throwing error on the play. The two runs pushed the Huskies’ lead to 13-2.
Southern Maine pounded out 18 hits against four Worcester State hurlers. Junior Sam Stauble (Harrison, Maine/Bridgton Academy) went 3 for 5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Quintal, Warren and senior Matt Bender (Walpole, Mass.) had two hits apiece.
Sophomore right-hander Dalton Rice (Waterford, Maine/Oxford Hills) evened his record at 1-1 after going 6.1 innings giving up two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out seven. Sophomore southpaw Ryan Gaydou (Dartmouth, Mass.) went the final 2.2 innings.
Senior Jake Ryan (Northbridge, Mass.) and rookie Kevin Larkin (Bristol, Conn./Rocky Hill) had two hits apiece for the Lancers. Senior right-hander Tyler Barrie (Oxford, Mass.), who went six innings allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out two, was tagged with his second loss of the season.
The Huskies took a 3-0 lead over the first three innings. Stauble and sophomore Kip Richard (Kennebunk, Maine) had RBI base hits in the first inning, and rookie Dylan Hapworth(Winslow, Maine) delivered the third run in the third inning with a sacrifice fly.
Worcester State got on the board in the fourth when rookie Ben Palatino (Hudson, Mass.) scored on a fielder’s choice. USM responded with a run in the fifth on Stauble’s RBI single. Worcester State made it 4-2 in the sixth with an unearned run scoring on Larkin’s RBI single.
