LONG ISLAND, N.Y. – Three different players scored second half to lead the William Paterson Pioneers to a 3-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the final game of the St. Joseph’s College (Long Island) Invitational Tournament at Danzi Stadium.
With the win, William Paterson improves its record to 4-1 on the season. The win is the fourth straight for the Pioneers. Suffering its second consecutive loss, Southern Maine is now 2-2 on the season.
With both teams having scoring chances in the first, the Huskies and the Pioneers battled to an 0-0 score at the break. William Paterson broke through early in the second half, as Dromo Quaye scored his first goal of the season in the 49th minute on a cross from Keysean Brant-Sharp.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of William Paterson until late in the second half when the Pioneers added a pair of goals in the final 20 minutes of the game. Freshman Christopher Fuentes (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Regional) collected a rebound off of sophomore Darwin Cruz’s (Bayonne, N.J.) initial shot in the 72nd minute to make it 2-0, before freshman Antonio Iliano (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) made it 3-0 in the 87th minute, again collecting a rebound off of a Cruz shot for a score.
The Pioneers held a 26-5 advantage in shots, and an 8-2 lead in corner kicks. Husky freshman Joseph Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine) and sophomore Sam Anderson (Middletown, Conn./Bristol Central) each had a strong first half scoring chance for Southern Maine, but WP senior goalkeeper Tim Morris (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) made both saves preserving the shut out. USM freshman Richard Glemawu (Accra, Ghana/South Kent (Conn.)) made nine saves on 11 shots on goal in 82:22. Junior Simon Hulbert (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) played the final 7:38 allowing one goal.
