DANBURY, Conn. – Sophomore Morgan Matthews (Bethel, CT) took a feed from classmate Carly Matasavage (Middlebury, CT) and knocked the ball into the back of the cage for the eventual game-winning goal as the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team blanked visiting Little East Conference foe Southern Maine, 1-0, on Saturday at The Westside Athletic Complex to kick-off Homecoming weekend.
With the win, the Colonials improved to 5-8 overall and 4-4 in league play, while the Huskies dropped to 4-9 and 3-4
Despite trailing in shots, 9-6, and penalty corners, 5-1, WestConn still managed to come away with the victory. The Colonials had a variety of quality scoring chances early in the first half. However, Southern Maine rookie goalkeeper McKenzie Cormier (Hiram, ME) notched some stellar saves.
The Colonials finally broke thru with less than six minutes remaining before halftime when Matthews buried her team-leading seventh goal of the season in a scrum in front of the visitors net.
WestConn freshman goalie Neve Manion (Newington, CT) was equally impressive in between the pipes, finishing with six saves while earning the shutout and improving to 5-8. Cormier finished with three and fell to 2-4.
Southern Maine returns to action at home against LEC foe Keene State on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.). Western Connecticut travels to Westfield State for a Little East Conference game on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.).
