DANBURY, Conn. – Junior midfielder Darion Richeme’ (Danbury, CT) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal and assisted on an insurance marker to lead the Western Connecticut State University men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine in the Little East Conference opener for both team on Saturday.


After a scoreless first half, the Colonials got on the scoreboard when Shane Pugliese(Plainville, CT) fed Richeme with a pass on the left side of the box in the 58th minute.  Richeme’ was able to tuck the ball into the lower left corner and off the mitt of Huskies keeper Richard Glemawu (Accra, Ghana).

With 2:48 remaining in the game, Richeme’ connected with Robert Della Penna(Suffield, CT) who then led Max Cano (Stratford, CT) for an open goal.  It was the freshman’s first collegiate goal.


“We played very well up front today and were able to battle the heat and a strong Southern Maine side for 90 minutes,” stated WestConn head coach Joe Mingachos.  “Also, Luca (DiCarlo) came up big with a diving save off a Huskies’ set piece to keep them off the scoreboard.”

Luca DiCarlo (Waterbury, CT) made three saves on the afternoon and improves to 3-1 on the season for WestConn, which evens its record at 3-3 overall and are now 1-0 in the LEC.

Glemawu made six saves for Southern Maine, which falls to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the league.
