DANBURY, Conn.   –  Sophomore Brooke Cross was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI, and freshman Alexis Brown(Malden, Mass.) earned the win in relief to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to an 8-4 win over the Western Connecticut State Colonials in the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Westside Field.  Southern Maine dropped the second game to WCSU 8-0 in five innings.

With the split, Southern Maine is 9-10 overall and 2-2 in Little East Conference action.  The Colonials are 2-2 in LEC action and 10-13 overall.

            GAME ONE: Southern Maine 8, Western Connecticut 4

Southern Maine knocked out 12 hits, led by three from Cross to earn an 8-4 win over the Colonials.  USM lead 4-1 through five and a half innings, but WCSU rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull even with the Huskies.  However, USM rallied in the top of the seventh with four runs, and kept the Colonials off the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning for the final.

USM struck early plating two runs in the top of the first on an RBI double from senior Mary Caron (Lewiston, Maine/St. Dominic’s Academy) and an RBI single up the middle from freshman Tabatha Hirsch (Coral Springs, Florida), but WCSU answered with one run in the bottom of the first on a solo home run from junior Jenna Gaudioso (East Haven, Conn.).  The home run was the first of two for the Colonials outfielder.

After a scoreless second, USM tacked on two more to lead 4-1 after three on an RBI single from senior Allison Pillar (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and an unearned run on a passed ball.  The score remain unchanged and in favor of the Huskies through five and a half innings before the Colonials rang up three runs on one hit and three USM errors in the bottom of the sixth.  Freshmen Natalia Hart (Milford, Conn.) and Kam Geysen (East Hampton, Conn.) each had RBIs in the inning as two of WCSU’s three runs were unearned.

With the game tied up at four, Cross stroked a two-run single to left field scoring Caron and senior Shelby Obert(Norridgewock, Maine/Skowhegan), and then came around to score on an outfield fielding error for a 7-4 USM lead.  Junior Amber Kelly (Berwick, Maine/Noble) added one more run with an RBI single to left.  USM scored its four runs on five hits and a pair of WCSU errors.

In their final at-bat, WCSU went down in order as Brown closed the game with a pair of strikeouts for the win. Brown pitched two innings allowing one run (unearned).  She gave up a walk and struck out three.  Freshman Madison Greene(Moultonborough, N.H.) had a no-decision despite a strong effort.  She allowed two earned runs (three total) on 10 hits and no walks. She struck out two.  Jaclyn Smith took the loss pitching 6.2 innings allowing six runs (one earned) on 11 hits and a walk. She struck out five.
