AUBURNDALE, Fla. — Sophomore Kyler Kent (Pottsboro, Texas) went 4 for 5 with two RBI to lead the Webster University Gorloks past the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 8-5, in a non-conference baseball game Monday morning at Lake Myrtle Park.
The win was the fifth straight for the Gorloks and improved their record to 6-2. The Huskies fell to 1-2 on the season.
Kent ignited a four-run uprising in the first inning against USM rookie starter Joshua Joy (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) with a double down the left-field line. After a walk to senior Ben Dinter (Gurnee, Ill.) loaded the bases, the Gorloks took advantage of an RBI single from senior Mike Wick (Bartlett, Ill.), an infield error, a hit batsman and an RBI single junior Danny Strohm (St. Louis, Mo.) to push across four runs.
Southern Maine struck back for three runs in the top of the second. Junior Devin Warren (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee), who led off the frame with a single, score the first run on a wild pitch. Classmate Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) scored on an RBI single from sophomore Anthony Degifico (South Portland, Maine). Senior Kyle Heath (Westbrook, Maine) scored the third run on sophomore Andrew Olszak’s (Danvers, Mass.) two-out single.
Webster added to its lead with a single run in the second on Wick’s sacrifice fly, and two in the fourth on Kent’s two-run single.
The Huskies inched back with a single marker in the fifth when Dexter drove in sophomore Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine), who had doubled, with a single, and another run in the seventh stringing together three straight singles from Warren, Dexter and junior Kip Richard (Kennebunk, Maine).
Rookie Ben Swords (Freeport, Ill.) led off the home half of the seventh with a triple and scored on Strohm’s one-out bunt single.
Both sides had 14 hits in the game. Dexter led the USM attack with three singles. Hapworth, Warren, Richard and Degifico all had two hits. Wick, Swords, Strohm and senior Connor Wardlaw (Arnold, Mo.) had two hits apiece for the Gorloks.
Sophomore Shane Donovan (Bartlett, Ill.) improved to 3-0 in season with 4.2 innings of one-run relief work. Donovan surrendered four hits and a walk while fanning three. Joy, who worked just one-third of an inning, took the loss. USM got a strong relief effort from sophomore Colton Lawrence (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) in the middle innings. Lawrence went three scoreless innings giving up just two hits and struck out six.
The Huskies are back on the diamond tomorrow morning (9 a.m.) taking on Washington University (Mo.) at Lake Myrtle Park. Webster takes on Rutgers University-Camden tomorrow (5 p.m.), also at Lake Myrtle Park.
