DANBURY, Conn. – Rashard Rodriguez scored a game-high 17 points to lead three players in double figures as the Western Connecticut State University Colonials defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 67-47 in a Little East Conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.
The win is the second straight for the Colonials who even their record at 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the Little East Conference. Southern Maine dips to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in the LEC.
Rodriguez hit four three-pointers en route to his game-high total, adding seven rebounds and three assists. Tyler Rowe was 5-for-13 from the field for 13 points, four rebounds, and four assists, while Geary McLeod added 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Husky freshman DJ Anderson turned in a strong performance off of the bench, setting a career-high for the second straight game scoring 15 points. Anderson shot an outstanding 5-for-8 from the field, including a blistering 4-for-7 from three. Senior Christian McCue (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) added nine points, while junior Sean Jany (Westbrook, Maine) added eight points.
While both teams struggled with shooting, WestConn led wire-to-wire outscoring USM 31-19 in the opening half. Rodriguez had nine points in the opening stanza for the Colonials. Sparked by 12 second-half points from Anderson, USM closed the gap late in the game, but WestConn used a game-ending 13-6 run to seal the victory.
Southern Maine travels to non-conference opponent UMaine Farmington on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.). Western Connecticut travels to Mitchell College for a non-conference tilt on Tuesday (6:00 p.m.).
