NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Senior Abi Akanni (Fitchburg, Mass.) was 9-for-14 from the field for a game-high 20 points to lead four players in double figures as the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 85-58 in a Little East Conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon.
With the win, UMass Dartmouth bounces back from its loss to Eastern Connecticut and improves to 10-5 overall and 4-1 in the Little East. Southern Maine suffers its third consecutive loss to stand at 5-10 overall and 0-5 in the Little East.
Akanni added five rebounds and three assists to pace the Corsairs. Sophomore Nick Portelance (Fairhaven, Mass./Greater New Bedford) totaled 17 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, shooting an outstanding 7-for-11 from the field. Senior Chris Mendes (Somerset, Mass./Tabor Academy) tossed in 15 points, while junior Tucker Bouchard (Kingston, Mass./Silver Lake) added 10 points off of the bench.
Southern Maine senior James Starks III (Miami, Fla./Miami Killian) recorded his ninth double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Zack Leal(York, Maine) added 11 points, and added five rebounds and four steals.
The Corsairs outscored USM 45-25 in the first half to set themselves up for the win. Akanni had 18 of his game-high 20 points, knocking down 8-of-10 from the floor as UMD shot 65.5 percent from the field to open the game. After the strong first half, USM, despite playing better in the second stanza, was unable to get closer than 17 points in the second half.
Southern Maine returns home to host UMass Boston on Wednesday (7:30 p.m.) in a Little East Conference game. UMass Dartmouth takes on Rhode Island College on Wednesday (7:30 p.m.) in an LEC tilt at home.
