BOSTON – Michael Boyd hit a three-pointer with 14 seconds in remaining in regulation to snap a 66-66 tie to lead the UMass Boston Beacons to a nail-biting 69-66 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night.
With the win, UMass Boston improves to 3-4 in the LEC and 9-9 overall. Southern Maine dips to 2-16 overall and 1-7 in conference action.
Boyd finished with 12 points off of the bench, knocking down two three-pointers, as one of five Beacons in double-figures. Charles Mitchell had 17 points, and Iser Barnes scored 12 points. Dan Powers and Dason Cinelli each scored 10 points, while Powers earned a double-double with 12 rebounds.
Freshman DJ Anderson (Houston, Texas/Davis) led the Huskies in scoring with 17 points, adding six rebounds, four assists and two steals in a solid all-around game. Senior Christian McCue (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) added 15 points, while junior Greyson Waterman (Berwick, Maine/Noble) came off the bench for a career-high 13 points, shooting 5-9 from field, including a pair of three-pointers. Waterman also added seven rebounds.
Anderson and Waterman each scored 11 points in the second half as the Huskies battled back and forth with the Beacons. Trailing UMB 54-46 with just under nine minutes on the clock, Southern Maine rallied to snag a one-point 55-54 lead with a 9-0 run. Waterman, Anderson and McCue accounted for all nine points in the Huskies’ run. Caught in a nip-and-tuck game, the lead exchanged hands five times and was tied three times over the final seven minutes of action. With three minutes left, Waterman canned a clutch three to put USM up 63-59. Both teams exchanged points, and Waterman kept USM in front 64-62 with a free throw, before Boyd for back-to-back layups for a 66-64 lead. Answering right back, McCue hit a driving layup in traffic to tie it up at 66 with less than 40 seconds remaining before Boyd converted on the go-ahead triple. USM had a shot at the game-tying basket, but came up short for the final.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (3:00 pm) when it hosts Keene State College in a Little East Conference game.
