FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.   –  Senior Moe Jones (Freeport, N.Y.) scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Plattsburgh State University Cardinals to a 70-54 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women’s basketball game played the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center as part of the 2016 Cruizin’ Classic.

With the win, Plattsburgh stops a three-game losing streak and improves to 5-4 overall.  Southern Maine drops its third straight and is 2-8 on the season.

Jones was 8-for-11 from the field for the game-high total.  She added three assists and a pair of steals.  Freshman Sarah Bonner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) chipped in with 10 points, including a 6-for-6 effort at the free throw line.  Freshman Frannie Merkel (Brewster, N.Y.) tossed in seven points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.  Senior Jax Miller (Argyle, N.Y.) and freshman Becca Mahon (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) each had eight points.  Mahon added seven rebounds including four offensive boards.

Southern Maine junior Miranda Nicely (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) led the Huskies with 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting.  Freshman Mychaela Harton(Georgia, Vermont/Essex) added nine points off of the bench, while junior Emily Nicholson added eight points, six rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.  Sophomore Alexa Srolovitz (Montreal, Quebec/New Hampton) and freshman Chantel Eels (Turner, Maine/Leavitt) each had seven points.  Freshman Jackie Luckhardt (Londonderry, N.H.) had a team-high eight rebounds.

Led by 11 points from Jones, Plattsburgh led the Huskies 35-20 at the half.  Jones was 4-for-7 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free throw line in the first half as the Cardinals shot 43.8 percent (13-for-30) to start the game, including four three-pointers.  Southern Maine shot 9-for-13 to open the first half and was led by six points each from Harton and Nicely.

Southern Maine bounced back in the second half and kept pace with the Cardinals but were unable to make any big runs.  Trailing by 22 at midway through the fourth quarter, USM strung together a 6-0 run on jumpers from Eells, Srolovitz and a layup from sophomore Kimberly Howrigan (Fairfield, Vermont/Bellows Free Academy) for a 62-46 Cardinal lead, but the Huskies were unable to get any closer than 15 the rest of the way. Howrigan finished with five points and five rebounds.

Southern Maine finished the game shooting 35.0 percent from the field, but shot 41.3 percent (12-for-29) from the floor in the second half, and 46.7 percent (7-for-15) in the fourth quarter.

Southern Maine returns to action on Monday (4:30 p.m.) in its second game of the Cruizin’ Classic.   The Huskies will face eighth-ranked Wartburg College Knights.  Plattsburgh State will face William Smith College on Monday (2:30 p.m).
