KEENE, N.H. – Senior Shelby Obert (Norridgewock, Maine/Skowhegan) was 2-for-4 with three RBI and junior Amber Kelly (Berwick, Maine/Noble) fired a six-hit shutout as the University of Southern Maine Huskies blanked the Keene State College Owls 5-0 in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader. Southern Maine dropped the first game 4-3 with on a KSC walk off hit in the bottom of the seventh.
With the split, Southern Maine is 7-7 overall and 1-1 in the Little East Conference. The games marked the first time the Huskies have played a game or outdoors since returning from their spring training trip to Florida in two weeks due to snow. Keene State is 7-8 overall and 1-1 in the LEC.
Game One: Keene State 4, Southern Maine 3
Junior Olivia Indorf (South Portland, Maine) drove in the game-winning run with an RBI sacrifice fly to center field to lead KSC to the 4-3 win. Indorf was able to get the game-winner after the first three Owls’ batters reached base safely on three straight walks.
KSC had trailed 3-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth before tying the game up. Senior Kayla Votto (Durham, Conn./Coginchaug) brought the Owls even with Southern Maine with a two-run double to centerfield. Votto finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored.
Southern Maine trailed KSC early after letting up a run in the bottom of the first but jumped ahead of the Owls in the fourth inning with three runs. Sophomore Brooke Cross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) had a two-run single through the right side in the inning, while senior Allison Pillar (Hollis, Maine/Bonny Eagle) had a sacrifice RBI.
KSC sophomore Molly St. Germain (Dover, N.H.) earned the win allowing three earned runs on six hits and a walk. She struck out six to improve to 5-4 on the season. USM junior Haeli Campbell (Manchester, N.H./Goffstown), who entered the game in relief, took the loss allowing one earned run on two hits and three walks in 2.1 innings.
Game Two: Southern Maine 5, Keene State 0
USM jumped ahead of the Owls early in game two, scoring a pair of runs on an RBI double from Obert in the top of the first. The double was the fourth of the year for the Huskies’ senior who drove in junior Taylor Lux (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) and senior Mary Caron (Lewiston, Maine/St. Dominic Academy). Lux led off the inning with a walk, and Caron singled to shortstop.
USM tacked on a third run in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from Tabatha Hirsch (Coral Springs, Fla./South Plantation). The Huskies made it 5-0 in the top of the fifth when Obert drove in her third run of the game with a single, and senior Samantha Crosman (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) knocked an RBI single to center.
Kelly was outstanding in the circle for the Huskies, scattering six hits and a walk over seven innings, while striking out three. Indorf suffered the loss for KSC pitching four inning and allowing three earned runs on four hits and three walks.
