ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine women’s soccer team won their 2018 home opener by defeating the Siena Saints, 2-1, on Sunday, September 9th, at the Mahaney Diamond.

Julia Mahoney got the Black Bears onto the board early in the first half with an unassisted goal. The freshman forward fought for possession and gained it at midfield. With her original shot being saved, Mahoney corralled the rebound and found the back of the net with 32:42 remaining in the first half. UMaine would take the 1-0 lead into the half.

The Saints answered back with a goal of their own 10 minutes into the second half. Ashleigh Sarafin squeezed her way between two Black Bear defenders and placed her strike inches below the crossbar. The game was now tied 1-1 with 36:51 to go in the game.

Nicole Bailey and Mahoney combined for the game winning goal at the 63:33 mark. Mahoney played the defense perfectly, holding onto the ball long enough to give Bailey time to separate herself from a Siena defender. Bailey received the pass from her teammate and ripped a one-timer passed the Siants’ goalkeeper.

Annalena Kriebisch and the Black Bear defense only needed the two goals, as UMaine hung onto the 2-1 lead for their third consecutive victory.
